Netflix is one of the biggest streaming companies in the world. It gives people access to thousands of movies and TV shows, including their most popular originals like Stranger Things, Wednesday, and K-pop Demon Hunters. Warner Bros Discovery, on the other hand, is a more historic entertainment company with over 100 year old legacy. They own some of the most famous cinema franchises like Harry Potter, DC Comics (like Superman, Batman), and The Lord of the Rings. They also run a streaming service, HBO, which has TV shows such as Friends, and Game of Thrones.

On December 5th, Netflix has officially announced an agreement to acquire Warner Bros Discovery for $82.7 Billion. This is one of the biggest media merge ever and could impact significantly how people access movies and TV shows in the future, and the cinema industry. If the deal is completed, which is expected sometime in late 2026, Netflix would gain the rights to all of Warner Bros' contents. This could mean one day people will be able to watch Harry Potter, Dune, and The Vampire Diaries all on Netflix instead of using multiple streaming apps. Contents that Netflix rented from Warner Bros, such as Gilmore Girls would now permanently stay on Netflix instead of them disappearing after the contract ends. Netflix says the goal is to combine Warner Bro's long history of storytelling with Netflix's large audience and global streaming.

Many fans are excited to have so many popular shows and movies on one platform. However, there are also concerns in public opinion. Some viewers worry the subscription price may increase significantly, since Netflix would control so much content. Others worry that fewer entertainment companies means less competition, leading to a downgrade in creativity.
