It's November! As we're approaching the new year of 2025, we are at a point where the annual conference, Model UN, is just one week away. Although some of you might already be quite familiar Model UN, some of you may not have a single idea about what it is, so let us give you some information and tell you a little more about what all the fuss is about.

YMUNK is a prestigious Model United Nations conference hosted by Yale University. It is hosted in KINTEX, Goyang City, South Korea. It attracts high school students from around the world who are passionate about international relations, diplomacy, and global issues. Each year, YMUNK selects a global theme or set of pressing issues for delegates to address, which usually aligns with current international concerns. Themes may revolve around topics like sustainable development, security, human rights, and economic cooperation. The conference provides a platform for delegates to develop skills in research, negotiation, public speaking, and critical thinking as they simulate real-world diplomatic negotiations.

This year, two students, both from the 10th grade, are attending the conference from our school. Maxim Tikhomirov is going to be representing the People's Republic of China in the CPD committee, while Siwen Lei is going to represent the United States of America in the UNIACB committee.

Let's explore the committees in more detail:

UNIACB (Siwen Lei): The UN Inter-Agency Committee on Bioethics (UNIACB) promotes and coordinates the policies that are universally accepted in the field of bioethics by inter-governmental agencies and organizations. This committee also facilitates international dialogue and understanding on bioethical issues, ensuring that diverse cultural, legal, and ethical perspectives are considered in global policymaking. Additionally, it plays a crucial role in developing educational and public awareness programs on bioethics, aiming to enhance global ethical standards in science and technology.

CPD (Maxim Tikhomirov): This committee will tackle the demographic issues that are challenging many countries in East Asia, including those in Korea. These issues also lend themselves to economic challenges such as labor shortages, rising healthcare costs, and a challenging housing market that will need to be discussed.

The YMUNK conference is not just an opportunity for students to showcase their knowledge and debate skills but also a platform where the leaders of tomorrow can engage with the challenges of today. Through their participation, Maxim Tikhomirov and Siwen Lei are not only representing our school but also gaining invaluable experience in diplomacy and critical thinking. As they step into their respective committees, they bring with them the hopes of tackling global issues with creativity and collaboration.

We wish them success in their journey and look forward to seeing the potential effects of their participation in shaping a better world.
