Korean AI & Semiconductor related stock significantly crashing: $1.3 trillion vanished in one single month.
Stock Market

Recently, Korean stockholders have just experienced the most cruel reality since the Great Recession in 2008(a severe global economic downturn that lasted from December 2007 to June 2009 ). Driven by macroeconomic uncertainty(widespread worry about overall economics, like inflation and high interest rates ) and rising skepticism over immediate AI profitability, the broader semiconductor sector saw over $1.3 trillion in valuation erased during the peak of the sell-off (Global AI Stock Market Selloff Report). This trend shows that if a student wants to major in computer science and engineering related to AI, then building practical skills are significantly more useful than just following the latest technology trend.

The epicenter of this regional decline hit the benchmark Korea Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI - an index that is similar to a “report card” of the overall economy in Korea), which decreased nearly 6% in a single session—triggering an emergency "sell-side sidecar" circuit breaker to halt automated program trading. South Korea’s primary technology powerhouses bore the heaviest impact: Samsung Electronics shares fell by 7.82%, while SK Hynix sank 9.75%. Foreign institutional investors rapidly pulled back capital, unloading a massive 3.49 trillion won ($2.47 billion) in net shares in just twenty-four hours (Herald Business reports).

The cruel reality emphasizes a comparison with the significant surge in South Korea's semiconductor stock market, which South Korea's benchmark KOSPI tripled, soaring from a baseline of ~2,284 points to an all-time peak of 9,385.59 (Trading Economics: KOSPI Benchmark Historical Index Data & Peaks) a few months ago.

This phenomenon reminds investors to be aware of the unpredictable market cycle, the obvious surge of a market often represents that the market is at its peak and it would most likely to show a decreasing trend in the future. For students that are interested in investing in the stock market, please be aware of not making arbitrary decisions and waste your allowance budget.
